Are you Selling your Science?

Do you want your research to reach society? Do you have entrepreneurial plans? Are you wondering about your career after your doctorate? Are you constantly negotiating with your professor? Do you want to strengthen your grant proposals? Do you want to stay in academia, or work outside university? These types of questions are addressed in this course.

“Selling your Science” is about skills. About ideation, presenting, pitching and persuasion. In this interactive course, you will learn to sell your science, either to external parties, or through a convincing knowledge utilization paragraph in a research proposal. You will practice key skills such as negotiation, pitching and entrepreneurship. And to provide you with the basics of a business perspective on research, you will learn some fundamentals about entrepreneurship, intellectual property (patents and copyright) and conflicts of interest. On day 2 you will apply the knowledge and skills from day 1 to your own research.

Two-day course

On day 1 you will master skills through brief lectures, an unfolding case and a lot of interactive assignments.

The second day consists of applying the knowledge and skills from day 1 to your own research. How do you write a story to convince parties to collaborate? And for those aspiring a career in academia: how can you sell your own science in a knowledge utilization paragraph of a grant application? At the end of day 2, you will have learned to implement lessons from day 1 into practice.

The following six topics are treated:

  1. Value of Research: An introduction to valorization, utilization, value creation. Why are they important?
  2. Intellectual Property: Covering the basics of Intellectual Property such as patents and copyright.
  3. Entrepreneurship: Lean what is necessary to turn an academic idea into a venture.
  4. Conflicts of Interest: How can you maintain your academic integrity when transferring your knowledge and collaborating with industry.
  5. Negotiation Workshop: Based on a case where intellectual property is key, you will negotiate a License Agreement.
  6. Pitching Workshop: Basic and effective techniques to pitch your research, such as on network events.

Course Dates & Time

Day 1:  July 4th, 2019 –  09.00-17.00 (Lunch included).

Day 2:  July 11th, 2019 –  13.00-17.00 (Optional celebration starting at 17:00).

If you are not available on these dates, register for the next session in autumn 2019.

A 4-hour additional time-investment is required in total for the preparatory assignment and applying the method to your own context between Day 1 and Day 2. We will conclude the course on day 2 from 17:00 onwards with an optional celebration and handing out the certificates at UtrechtInc (Padualaan 8, Uithof Utrecht). All Selling Your Science alumni (including you from that point onwards) are welcome at this celebration.

0,75 EC (upon attendance of both days)

Course certificate

You will receive a certificate of completion (Graduate School students) if you attend and complete both sessions of the course.


To register for our courses, it is preferred (not mandatory) that you are registered with the Graduate School (e.g. of Life Sciences). Registration with the GS-LS takes place through submission of the Training & Supervision Agreement to the office of the dean of the faculty of employment.
