What you will learn
“Selling your Science” is about skills. About ideation, presenting, pitching and persuasion. In this interactive course, you will learn to sell your science, either to external parties, or through a convincing knowledge utilization paragraph in a research proposal. You will practice key skills such as negotiation, pitching and entrepreneurship. And to provide you with the basics of a business perspective on research, you will learn some fundamentals about entrepreneurship, intellectual property (patents and copyright) and conflicts of interest. On day 2 you will apply the knowledge and skills from day 1 to your own research.

Two day course
On day 1 you will master skills through brief lectures, an unfolding case and a lot of interactive assignments.
The second day consists of applying the knowledge and skills from day 1 to your own research. How do you write a story to convince parties to collaborate? And for those aspiring a career in academia: how can you sell your own science in a knowledge utilization paragraph of a grant application? At the end of day 2, you will have learned to implement lessons from day 1 into practice.
The following six topics are treated:
1. Value of Research: An introduction to valorization, utilization, value creation. Why are they important?
2. Intellectual Property: Covering the basics of Intellectual Property such as patents and copyright.
3. Entrepreneurship: Learn what is necessary to turn an academic idea into a venture.
4. Conflicts of Interest: How can you maintain your academic integrity when transferring your knowledge and collaborating with industry.
5. Negotiation Workshop: Based on a case where intellectual property is key, you will negotiate a License Agreement.
6. Pitching Workshop: Basic and effective techniques to pitch your research, such as on network events.

10 to 18 participants
An online format has been taken into account for both these days. There will be multiple breaks, and on the 1st of April the groups will be split.
A 4-hour additional time-investment is required in total for the preparatory assignment and applying the method to your own context between Day 1 and Day 2.
In addition to the scheduled sessions, you should take into account an extra study load of approximately 4 hours in total. This study load generally consists of homework assignments in preparation for the next session.
Number of Credits
You will receive a certificate of completion (Graduate School students) if you attend and complete both sessions of the course.
Cancellation and No-show policy
This course is free for GSLS PhD candidates. However: free of charge does not mean free of responsibility. Once you have signed up for a course, we expect you to attend. For every late cancellation or no-show we have had to disappoint others who would have liked to attend. This is our policy:
- You may cancel free of charge up to 4 weeks before the start of the course. After this date you can only cancel if you have a GSLS PhD candidate to replace you in the course. Send the name and contact information of your replacement to firstname.lastname@example.org, at least 2 working days before the start of the course;
- We expect that you actively attend the full course, but at least 80%. It is mandatory to attend the first session. If you are absent the first session you cannot follow the remaining of the course;
- Not meeting the above requirements means you will be charged a no-show fee (€ 225). We will send the invoice after the course has ended. We are unable to make any exceptions, unless you have a valid reason (i.e., illness or death in the family 1st/2nd degree or partner). Your supervisor has to send an e-mail to email@example.com indicating the reason.
