Make It Matter Voucher Program

Utrecht Science Park

The Make It Matter Voucher program helps bridge the gap from research to real world impact.

Program Objective

The Make It Matter Voucher Program supports early-stage technology validation with targeted funding for 12-month proof-of-concept projects. The vouchers are not for regular research projects but are specifically intended to bridge the gap between academic discovery and commercial application.

The voucher can be used for, but not exclusively:

  • Performing feasibility studies for commercial application of innovative knowledge
  • Experimental validation of inventions to strengthen IP position
  • Collecting validation data and conducting proof-of-concept studies
  • Commercialization preparation activities
Program Details

The voucher amount is €25,000. The voucher funding operates on a success-based repayment model. If your project successfully reaches commercialization and generates license income, the voucher amount will be repaid. However, if your project does not achieve commercialization, no repayment is required. This approach ensures that researchers can pursue, high-risk, high-reward innovation projects without financial burden while allowing successful projects to sustain the program for future participants.

Applications must be UU or UMCU employees and the projects should be based on novel intellectual property with commercial potential. Applicants must be motivated and willing to engage with business developers, potential partners and stakeholders. The project should start within 6 months after approval.

Program Deliverables

To reduce the workload writing we will provide you with a reporting template. After 12 months this report covers the project objectives and deliverables achieved, TRL assessment and IP/commercialization findings, an impact assessment and the next steps. Additionally, we expect an intermediate report after 6 months to get a grip on your progress and provide guidance if necessary.

Program Deliverables

A multidisciplinary advisory committee evaluates applications based on established criteria. The committee assesses proposals and ranks them for funding priority when necessary. The applications are evaluated based on four equally weighted criteria:

  • Knowledge base and innovativeness
  • Commercial/Market potential
  • The team
  • Quality of the project plan

Templates are provided to ensure each applicant touches upon the criteria used in the evaluation. The evaluation committee consists of a diverse group of people from within UH, but if necessary, external experts will be consulted.

Feedback and support for applicants

All applicants receive feedback on their proposals within 3 weeks of submission, regardless of whether they are selected for funding. If needed, you may be invited for an interview round to discuss your application in more detail.

Ongoing support will be provided by the Business Developers who will help assess your project’s eligibility and commercial potential, assist in preparing a strong application and plan, provide guidance on commercialization, IP development etc. throughout the project.

A maximum of 100% of the eligible project costs can be reimbursed and must be specified (personal, material, investments, other). The following costs are excluded from reimbursement:
